The Marchfeld region with its 23 municipalities is full of secrets. Almost boundless expanses, primeval alluvial forests and the special animal inhabitants of the Marchfeld have something fairytale-like about them. But this multifaceted region between Vienna and Bratislava also has a lot to offer in terms of history! It was the stage for famous battles, empires were founded and fell apart. The Lower Austrian provincial exhibition at Marchegg Castle provided the compass for exploring this exciting region.

MARCHFELD secrets - people.culture.nature at Marchegg Castle

Under the title “MARCHFELD Secrets - People.Culture.Nature.”, visitors to the Lower Austrian Provincial Exhibition 2022 at Marchegg Castle were invited to rediscover the Marchfeld region. Because the Marchfeld is full of secrets and contrasts: Granary or barren soil? Natural area or cultural area? Stork paradise or oil field?

Nine main themes led through the history of the Marchfeld region to illustrate the development of a cultural landscape and to explore the relationship between man, culture and nature over the centuries to the present day. The natural area without human influence is highlighted as well as the settling down of man, the Baroque era, the Industrial Revolution and the energy transition.

In order to make the discovery tour at Marchegg Castle accessible to everyone, the Lower Austrian provincial exhibition was also designed to be inclusive. An exhibition guide with sign language and an audio guide for visually impaired people were provided. Tactile objects and a tactile guidance system rounded off the exhibition's inclusive design.

Schloss Marchegg GmbH's stork house was already in operation during the Lower Austrian Provincial Exhibition 2022. The Storchenhaus is both a store and a point of contact for people interested in nature. In the Storchenhaus store you will find regional delicacies from Marchfeld farmers and producers, books, souvenirs and equipment for visiting the floodplain reserve directly behind Marchegg Castle.

The daily nature tours organized by the Storchenhaus Marchegg invite you to discover the nature around Marchegg Castle. The largest tree-breeding white stork colony in Central Europe lives in the March floodplains directly behind Marchegg Castle. Until their departure in mid-August, exciting and curious facts about the white storks were told in the nature education program “In the realm of the storks”. The second nature education program “In the realm of trees” was offered from mid-August and took visitors to Marchegg Castle Park with its old trees and their interesting insect inhabitants.
